Star of Shadowbrook Farm
Published in Paperback by Harper Mass Market Paperbacks (June, 1998)
Author: Joanna Campbell
Average review score:

One of my favorite books of all time...
I discovered this book accidentally; I was looking through a bookstore for books, and my friend's mom bought it for me. I never have ridden a horse, but I guess it's always been a childhood fantasy of mine. I don't know why I grabbed it, but I've read it so many times that it is falling apart and I need a new copy.

This book is not really related to Joanna Campbell's Thoroughbred novels. It involves a horse, but that's about it. The main character, Susan, is forced to deal with many issues that many young girls face in their lives, especially an uncontrollable fear, and feeling alone at school. After Susan's best friend moves away, she feels all alone, with only her parents' stable and her duties there to distract her. She teaches horse-jumping classes, and one day she is so distracted by her worst enemy that she makes a mistake. The horse she is riding freaks out, and Susan is thrown off the sadle, and her arm breaks. She uses her broken arm as an excuse never to ride a horse again. But, through a new horse that her father buys, named Star, and a new friend, Susan learns that she must put her fears of falling off another horse aside, and work to prove to the world, and to herself, that she is capable of anything.

An Addict
I was given this book when I was around 8 or 9 years old, it has been many years and sadly to say my copy was lost to me a couple years ago. It is one of my favorite books and I am currently awaiting my chance to read it again.

This book is about overcoming everyday fears, growing pains and facing yourself as well as the world, plus its about a horse..how could you go wrong :)

Great read for any horse lover.

Great!
This book is just as good as any other Thoroughbred book and that's saying a lot! If there's a seller selling it new or used, jump to the chance. It's totally worth the extra money. If your collecting Thoroughbred books, this one is a very important one. Hope you like it as much as I do...

The Adventure Continues

For those who love aviation and travel
Wow! What an adventure! This book is the next best thing to making the trip yourself. The photography is outstanding.

For all interested in aviation
The book follows a group of flyers as they retrace the "Kangaroo Route" (flown from London England to Sydney Australia) in their 1954 Grumman Albatross. The Albatross, a large amphibious aircraft, and several other aircraft retraced the Kangaroo Route in an Air Race to commerate Australia's 100th Birthday.

The book begins with a history of the Kangaroo Route. It then follows the Albatross as they ferry the aircraft, first across the United States and then across the Atlantic Ocean, to England. Once in England the Air Race is begun. Along the way, they travel from England to France, then to Greece, through the Middle East, India and Indonesia. After several stops in Australia, they continue on across the South Pacific to New Zealand, the Cook Islands and Tahiti. They even make a stop on Easter Island! From there it is to Peru in South America and north through the Central American countries of Panama and Belize. From there they finally are back in the United States.

The photography is spectacular as are the descriptions of the various places the crew visited. Get this book and check it out! You won't be disapointed.

Exciting Photography
I couldn't put the book down the first time I saw it! The photography was beautiful...and the race must have been very exciting. It was fun to travel with this crew through the documentary of their journey. I got to travel the world without ever leaving home. How nice is that? But even if I hadn't read a word, the photography said it all. A must for those who enjoy seeing other countries and cultures.

A Joseph Campbell Companion

Author: Diane K. Osbon

A great start on your journey to Joe Campbell & your bliss!
This is a great introduction to, or summation of, Campbell's works. Most of his works are extreemly deep and can be difficult to reach but well worth the effort. If you really want to probe the deapths of Campbell's work but are intimidated by his other books, this will give you a great overview and fire your desire to dig deeper.

I have read all of Campbell's books. The amount and breadth of the information and thier implications is staggering. The most amazing thing about this book is that I would have chosen almost exactly the same summative material for this type of book as did Osborn. My background is steeped in science--Osborn's in poetry. Yet we found the same "song of the universe" within Campbell's works.

Why? Because the song is transparent to the transendent and there for the everyone.

Genius At Work
Unlike most of Joseph Campbell's other works, A JOSEPH CAMPBELL COMPANION can be used as a daily reader with each brief topic consumed separately. The text of the book draws its material from an intensive seminar led by Campbell at Esalen in 1983.

The seminar lasted for one month and was attended by the editor, Diane K. Osbon, and nine other fortunate people.

In one memorable segment Campbell discusses the woman's life and her journey. The traditional role of the woman is in relationship in one way or another to a family. This role can continue into old age as in the example of the grandmother. Campbell contrasts the traditional female role to that of the female professors who are more on the male hero's journey deriving fulfillment from worldly achievements. Campbell sees these women as being less fulfilled than women who are also in nontraditional roles but are totally involved in the arts. The latter receive their fulfillment mostly from doing what the artist does and not so much from their accomplishments.

If you begin to read A JOSEPH CAMPBELL COMPANION, it will be a difficult volume to put back in the book case. It is more likely to remain close at hand to be read again and again.

The Joseph Campbell Companio
Outstanding. This is my Bible. Unbelievable wealth of things to read and re-read for the rest of your life. His best work by far. Almost as good is his 5-tape series hosted by Susan Sarandon and much, much better than his 6-tape set with Bill Moyers which is an elementary introduction to Campbell. Moyers tried hard but couldn't seem to get his brain around Campbell's message. Anyone who wants to be fully engrossed in Campbell can do so with the Sarandon tape series and this book. A rare jewel.

my favorite one-must read!
This book was great! it's one of my favorites. i recommend this book to anyone. i love shining and samantha! Anyway, in this book samantha finally gets her own horse (shining) and is almost ready to race! Then Mandy,a disabled child and a friend of smantha's wants to buy shining and her parents make samantha an offer. Will smantha have to give up Shing? and will Shining ever get to race? read this to fing out.

(if u must know ...[spoiler])-A must read

A AWESOME BOOK, ONE OF THE BEST YET!!!!!!!!!
This such a breath taking book. It was very good and parts of it were sad when Shining came home to Whitebrook looking like she did. But the best part was when Samantha turned Shining around. And I think Mandy's parents had no right into thinking to buy Shining, Samantha's first and only hosre, for Mandy. Shining is a very valuable Thoroughbred that might race and make a lot of money for Samantha. But even if Samantha sells Shining, she could never race her because Mandy's parents couldn't afford it. Then, just when you start to think that Samantha is going to sell Shining, Mandy's parents changed their mind in thinking to get Mandy and Thoroughbred. Instead they but Butterball from Tor's stable. Ans now Samantha has Shining all to herself and she begins winning major races with Ashleigh as her jockey and her dad, Ian Mclean, and her trainer. Together, they burn up the track!!!

Oh, Shining
If you love Wonder than you'll adore Shining. I think this is the best book of the whole series so far! I have read this book over 12 times! This book just had so much emotion. . . and it's easy to relate to Samanta & Shining. Samantha knows if Shining is nursed back to health, she can win, and be like her Champion sister, Ashleigh's Wonder. GOTTA READ this one.

about this story
A Horse For Christmas By: Joanna Campbell

Have you ever wanted something really bad, but you knew someone else might even need it more than you? If not, you should read A Horse For Christmas by Joanna Campbell. Ashleigh Griffen, a 10 year old girl, rescued a horse from its evil master and named it Lightning. She cared for it, trained it with help from her friend Kurt and bred it back to health. For Christmas, her parents decided to adopt Lightning for Ashleigh but the Humane Society finds it a better home. Ashleigh wants to adopt Lightning until she meets sick Kira at Hopewell, a cancer treatment center for children recovering from cancer and children that have cancer. Now, Ashleigh needs to make the decision but she doesn't know what to do. Part of her heart wants to keep Lightning since she loves it but the other half of her heart wants to give it to the sick children. Finally, with help from Ashleigh's friend Mona, she decides to give the horse to the children since she know that it will make them happy and they need it more than she does. My favorite part is when she tries to ride Lighting for the first time. She is good with Lightning but she has some hard times because Lightning's past was abusive. The Humane Society comes and sees how badly she was doing and Ashleigh thought the Humane Society would never let her keep Lightning. I recommend this story to anyone. Especially someone who can relate to the same situation that Ashleigh had to face. This book taught me a lesson and it was good Ashleigh gave up something she wanted so much, to sick children, that needed it even more.

GOOD BOOK ALERT!
I've read a book called A Horse For Christmas recently. It was a good book, in fact it was so good, all my friends want to borrow it! It's the sequel to Lightning's Last Hope. It's about when the Griffens want to adopt Lightning for Ashleigh. But The Humane Soicaty says they've found another home for Lightning! So they let Ashleigh decide if she wants to keep Lightning or gvive her to the other home. This book teaches about thinking about others before yourself and the best gift is one you'd want yourself. I think that Ashleigh made the right choice. I really, really liked the book and if you horses and like to read, you should read this book!

A great horse book!
This book is just so great! I loved it from the start to the end! I got it for Christmas and I thought that title was very fitting, "A Horse for Christmas". :)

Lightning, the poor abused horse Ashleigh and her friend Mona had rescued, had gradually become back to normal again. She's beautiful and Ashleigh took it for granted that Lightning was hers. After all, she was the one who took care of it and rescued it from "Mr. Nasty". Naturally, she is shocked when she hears that the Humane Society had found another home for Lightning. She also finds out that that home was a cancer treatment center for children who were recovering from cancer. When Ashleigh goes to Hopewell(The hospital), she meets a girl same as her age who was still recovering from cancer and loved horses. Ashleigh then has to choose whether she will give Lightning for Christmas to the sick children at Hopewells as a healing treatment...or keep Lightning.

Very interesting! I liked it alot! You have to read the next book after you're done with this one!

Trixie Belden the Red Trailer Mystery (Trixie Belden, No. 2)
Published in Paperback by Golden Pr (September, 1980)
Authors: Julie Campbell and Kathryn Kenny
Average review score:

Red Trailer Mystery
The Red Trailer Mystery is my very favorite Trixie Belden book. I absolutely love the first few books in the series, getting to know Trixie, Honey, and Jim. I still re-read these books regularly, even after all these years, and I would whole-heartedly recommend any books in this series to any young girl.

Trixie and Honey search for runaway Jim
This book is the direct sequel to Trixie Belden and the Secret of the Mansion, which really must be read first. On the quest to find Jim -- on the lam from his evil stepfather Jonsey -- Trixie, Honey, and Miss Trask arrive in the Autoville trailer park, and the girls eventually find the dual mysteries of Jim's whereabouts and a stolen red trailer converging in one area of countryside. The Red Trailer Mystery does get confusing and could have used a map, but the author summarizes the action periodically, and it sounds natural and helps develop the reader's comprehension and critical thinking.

I think this series gave me an appreciation in my adult life for the benefits of family, community, and enduring friendships.

Trixie, a vibrant teen detective, pursues a missing friend.
The Trixie Belden Mysteries are the perfect gift books for the young reader searching for an independant, bright, and forthright young heroine to be friends with.
In the Red Trailer Mystery, Trixie, her friend Honey, and Honey's former teacher set out in a trailer home to find Jim, the young runaway who they met and befriended in the first book of the series. Jim has disappeared from the abandoned mansion where he was hiding, not knowing that Trixie and Honey have discovered a secret about his past that will change all of their lives forever. Will Trixie, Honey, and Miss Trask be able to find Jim, or has he disappeared for good?

The Trixie Belden Mysteries are aimed at the pre-teen and early teenage girl reader, and do a great job of showing a funny, hot tempered, and smart young woman solving the kind of mysteries that Nancy Drew would have wished to come across. The contrast between the hot-tempered Trixie and the introspective Honey creates a partnership which characters in the books describe as a female Holmes and Watson. Trixie herself is independant, career oriented, and not without the small faults that will make her appealing to the young reader. Thanks to Julie Campbell's vivid writing, Trixie's home of Sleepy Hollow, NY, also comes to life. The descriptions of the area are mouth-watering, and will make even the most devoted mall-rat want to take up horseback riding.

Although slightly dated, The Trixie Belden Mysteries are realistic in their willingness to include characters with less than perfect personalities and occasionally problems in their past. As all good mysteries should, the Trixie Belden books will come to a climax which pits Trixie and her friends against a problem that will require them to work as a team, trust each other, and think ahead (which is not always Trixie's strong point). As a final recommendation, the earlier books of the series are definately the most worthwhile, as they feature the strongest characterization and most unique storylines, but devoted fans will not be able to resist utilizing their detective skills to find every volume of the series.

Triumph Over Hepatitis C : An Alternative Medicine Solution (Revised Edition)

Effective Alternative Cure For Hepatitis C
I reviewed Mr. Wright's book, Triumph Over Hepatitis C prior to publication and conferred with him on the published edition. I have read the entire volume. Mr. Wright was a patient of mine begining in 1996 and I worked with him in developing the remedy in Triumph Over Hepatitis C. I reviewed many of his blood tests prior to treating him as well as reviewing blood tests as he used the herbs and supplements prescribed and a continues dscline of his liver enzymes took place as he continued on the program. Futher he had sustained sever liver damage to near cirrhosis and had complications from cancer and lengthy chemotherapy and radiation therapy. He had been a patient at UCLA and diagnosed with hepatitis c in Dec.1994. In accordance with his biopsy results his liver enzymes readings were AST (SGOT) panel at 210 (1-41normal) and ALT (SGPT) panel at 245 (0-45normal). He was bedridden, and he could not tolerate interferon treatment. He was in the last stages of the disease, and there was no hope for him. Then with a good nutritional program along with a concentrated effort to take everything in the remedy he describes in his book, he started to feel better right away, and a year later he was healthy and virus free---they couldn't find any virus in him. He has been hepatitis c free for nearly 3 years and has liver enzyme readings of AST(SGOT) panel at 23 and ALT (SGPT) panel at 12. Mr Wright's account of the events he encountered from contraction of hepatitis c to his complete recovery and the remedy that saved his life is a must read for anyone with hepatitis c, cancer, HIV and AIDS. This is a true patient to patient testimonial which can save hepatitis c patients a lot of disappointment, trouble and money. It also is a good story that gives real hope for the patient with dire diagnosis. It would not surprise me if this book is made into a movie in record time. DR. John Finnegan,N.D.

this book saved my life!
Hepatitis c is the main reason for a liver transplant...thats what i was told when i was diagnosed in july 2000, i was sent home with a box of needles, tylenol and another appointment for a liver biopsy. I sat in my car unable to digest the horrible news about my liver, i cried for 30 minutes i have never been so afraid, ever! I decided not to do anything until i knew all of the treatments available, after diligent searching, i found a book that i know saved my life, "Triumph over Hepatitis C", Lloyd Wright lit the path for the rest of us, his simple approach to getting well was very enlightening to me, i feel as though everyone has a purpose in life, Lloyd Wright knows excatly what we "heppers" are going threw, and what we need to survive, it was so obvious to me the minute i started reading the book, they way Lloyd Wright conveyed the message to the readers, we knew it was for real, he is the most informed human being on the planet when it comes to hepatitis c, i know because my hepatitis c is almost in remission! I am so thankful for this book, Lloyd, and especially God, for leading me to this book, it has changed my life! it gave me hope, my one wish is to someday meet Mr. Wright just to give him a hug for saving my life, i have purchased several of the books and passed them on to others, it is such a light hearted book to read once i started reading i could not put it down, and still have not, i constantly refer back to it, it picks me up! continuely... The author of this book takes the reader on a path threw his life dealing with this horrific virus, what he did for the virus, blood tests, personal dilemas and then, he so openly shares what would take years for most of us to find out concerning the cleaning and rejuvinating of the liver, i am pleased to say that i will not be needing a liver transplant, it is a gift for anyone that is fortunate enough to have this book placed in the palm of their hands, i mean that with all my heart, and that is what Lloyd Wright did when he wrote this book, he had to it was his mission in life, to follow his heart! I wish i could give this book 10 stars....thank you Mr. Wright~ sincerely, Katie Glenn

Samantha's Journey

This was great!
I thought this was by far one of Karen Bentley's favorite books. I think it was wonderful to find out what happend to Sammy before she came to Townsend Acres! Karen Bentley should do a relive book on Cindy and she or Joanna should go back to writing the Thouroughbred series. I read #24 and I sorry to say,but Allison Estes just switched characters from Karen Bentley's. At least when Joanna changed from Ash to Sam and back and then to Cindy, she explained how they came into the story! Please get one of you guys to come back!

Wonderful
This was the best Thoroughred book in a long time. I just couldn't put it down! The way Karen Bently described Sammy's feelings was perfect. I'd been waiting for a book of Sammy or Ashleigh. Thank you! I knew Tor and Sammy would get married soon. I can't wait! I just have one error check. You called Honor Bright Wonder's daghter, when she's really the daughter of Townsend Princess, Wonder's real daughter. By the way I want to learn more about Christina Reese. Keep them coming!

Ohh, this one was good!
I loved this book. All but one person gave this book 5 stars and I do too! It was great and Sammy's always been my favorite (kinda with Ashleigh, too) and she's finally getting married to Tor! Did anyone else think that "Oh, Sammy. Kiss me." Was a little lame? Sorry, that's just my opinion. I could write forever, but I just got "The Horse Of Her Dreams" and I want to get reading!

Shining's Orphan (Thoroughbred 12)
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Author: Joanna Campbell
Average review score:

An emotional book!
After 8 books of Samantha (including this one) we get a little change of scenery. This book and book # 13 and 19 are the most emotional in the whole series (other than the Specials which are VERY emotional). You feel Cindy's hope, share her fears, and share her hate for her social worker who doesn't want her with the Mcleans. I HATE that woman. Cindy really shares many feelings with Shining because they come from the exact same backround. They were happy at first (Shining living on a first class farm, Cindy with her parents), then tragedy stuck (Shining was auctioned off, Cindy's parents died). Then they were brought to Whitebrook not trusting anyone but themselves, and they're shells were broken through, and they both became something great. A great introductery to Cindy, and since she has so many books about her that's important.

Great Book
At first when I found out that this book would be about a different character, I didn't want to read it. I mean, Samantha has been my favorite character and I loved how she finally got her own horse Shining. I was also finally starting to get into reading about Mandy. All I wanted was to read more about Samantha and Shining. I knew that once the character switched, Samantha would pretty much be out of the picture. But then I read it and it was really good. It of course was about an orphan that Samantha finds in the barn one night. Samantha fights to keep her at Whitebrook. Samantha's Dad and Beth finally get married, which I knew was going to happen sometime. I was a little disappointed that nothing really happened with Shining, I mean she's probably my second favorite horse in the series (Pride being my favorite). Samantha and Tor had some problems with their relationship which I thought was very realistic. I thought their relationship was going to turn out being exactly like Ashleigh and Mike's. You know, Mike was her first and only boyfriend, everything was perfect between them, and they got married. I'm glad it wasn't that simple with Samantha and Tor. I was glad that Mandy and Yvonne were in it too. I've always liked how nice Samantha was to Mandy. Anyway, the basics of it are that everyone fights for Cindy(The orphan) to stay. It really isn't much about the horses, which I didn't like. I did like the book overall though. I definitly would give it 5 stars!

The best!
I loved this book!! I think it would be very surprising to go into the barn to check on your horse and find a girl in the stall next to your horse!! I really hate it when Angelique tries to steal Tor from Samantha. I think the Thoroughbred series books are very emotional. They make you feel like you are one of the characters. I have read #1 through #12, and one Super Edition, and I have really liked them all. I seriously recommend this book and the rest of the series!!! If you haven't read this book, you should!!!

False Prophets, Tramps, & Thieves

Entertaining and a fast read
FALSE PROPHETS, TRAMPS AND THIEVES was VERY enjoyable to read. Not only was it a fast paced, easy read..., I found myself anticipating the next time I'd be able to sit down and finish this amusing novel! I was able to picture the quirky characters (and some not so quirky) in my imagination quite easily and often found myself reading with a SMILE on my face!!

My one question to the authors is this: Is there a follow up to this book? Now that I am done, I find myself CRAVING for a sequel! Any other future encounters for Anne Davis?? Her life is filled with too many dysfunctunal people who surround her to fit into one story! I would hope you'd consider this option!!

I would HIGHLY recommend this book to others who are looking for a story that will entertain and amuse them, take them away from their daily grind, and help them to escape life's hum-drums. This is definitely a MUST READ, you won't be disappointed...I wasn't!!

Why I don't need to visit southern California anymore
False Prophets, Tramps & Thieves was a great read. The characters are beautifully developed and their perspectives on life, their foibles and their motives are all too familiar. I've never been to southern California, but I have to believe that this one funny book tells me all I ever wanted to know.

Wonderful Surprise!
This easy read book is a wonderful surprise! This is truly celluloid-ready material. This one is a witty and charming piece of writing. The characters are unique and visual. The action moves and keeps you guessing. The plot is fun and tense and thoughtful all at once. And if it ain't on the screen (or at least available on video) in the next few years - OR - slated for development, then I'm hanging up my own filmmaking and screenwriting interests for good.
